Who watches online video in the uk?  You may have thought that this was the preserve of the younger market..  Not so the demographic shows that the age group 45 plus accounts for 34% of all online viewers.  The data:

• 15-24 19%
• 25-34 17.5%
• 35-44 19.2%
• 45-54 17.1%
• 55 plus 17.4%

Google local more local.  When searching Google by a specific location be it town or city you will usually get a Google map with local service providers.  This has not been that accurate as it detects your server IP location and serves info based on that.  Now Google have added a new facility on the left hand side so that you can specify your exact location to get more relevant results.

This is good news for local businesses and should form part of your SEO strategy especially when the service / goods you supply is limited to a local market.  Even national companies can benefit by having regional depots or sales office register for Google local.

Google honeymoon period what is it? Firstly this is an unofficial term that explains what happens to a new website in the first 3-6 months. Having been found by Google the search engine will randomly, not enough data to validate to establish a pattern, place your web pages in really good positions for a variety of keywords that match your content. It does this to give you a boost to see how it does.

What it is looking for is how many link to your content you get having exposed it into a high traffic stream. From that it will determine your natural page rank.

So expect your website to appear and disappear quite often in the first 3-6 months. Do not lose heart when you think you have made it and then lose good search placements again it is normal.  What you need to be doing is working hard to create links to your website that are related to your content. It is very tempting at this stage to fall for a link building site / company. Resist the temptation as these options will not get the results you want. See back link seo.

The best way to start building links is to engage in social networking Twitter, Facebook etc are obvious and should be used.  The best things about those is that you set them to update each other.  But there are others.  Seek out specific forums related to your business, set up an account and engage with the community.

Back link SEO what not to do!

Back links are a part of SEO.  There is no denying it.  But it can go terribly wrong if you are not actually in control of it.  It is very tempting to sign up to a low cost link builder but don’t.  At best the links are valueless and at worst they will do you more harm than good.

What is the definition of a good link?  A good back link is one that has occurred naturally because your opinion or content is valuable to someone else, or believes it is of interest to their readership, with a shared interest.  Typically your content will be linked from a website related to your content or market sector.

What is a bad link?  Well there are many:

• Paid links – These seriously put your website at risk of being black listed by search engines
• Directory listing – Unless they are industry specific or have some form of qualification to join these are worthless
• Article submission – Single articles to a single publisher are OK.  Same article to multiple publishers are pointless
• Links from websites out of context to your own – It may be nice that your family provide a link to you but if they are not related to your content then again are pointless
• Creating multiple websites to exploit anchor text links – risky at best but remember a search engines check registration details, contact info and everything else that could link you as the owner.  So if you create multiple websites you must use rel=”nofollow” to all links to your other websites.  This prevents search engines from following the link.
